Woodworking Carbide Inserts

Replaceable tungsten carbide inserts for spiral cutterheads, planer cutterheads, cutter blocks, and other woodworking tools. Available in square, radius-edge, and rectangular designs with multiple usable cutting edges, standard and custom sizes, and different edge radii for efficient and economical woodworking production.

Woodworking Carbide Inserts

Persistools woodworking carbide inserts are replaceable cutting components used in spiral cutterheads, helical cutterheads, planer cutterheads, cutter blocks, and other woodworking tool systems.

Manufactured from tungsten carbide, these inserts provide high wear resistance, good cutting-edge stability, and consistent performance when machining solid wood, MDF, particleboard, plywood, and other engineered wood materials.

Unlike conventional long planer knives, indexable carbide inserts can be individually replaced or rotated when one cutting edge becomes worn. This reduces maintenance time and allows the cutterhead to continue operating without replacing the complete cutting system.

Square Carbide Inserts

Square carbide inserts are among the most widely used designs for spiral and helical cutterheads.

Common sizes include:

  • 12 × 12 mm
  • 14 × 14 mm
  • 15 × 15 mm

Many square inserts provide four usable cutting edges. When one edge becomes worn or damaged, the insert can be rotated to expose a fresh edge.

Some designs use a slight cutting-edge radius such as:

  • Straight
  • R100
  • R150
  • Custom radius

The large-radius edge helps provide smoother cutting and better overlap between adjacent inserts on spiral or helical cutterheads.

Rectangular Carbide Inserts

Rectangular inserts are commonly used on cutter blocks, heavy-duty cutterheads, profiling tools, and other replaceable-knife systems.

Typical sizes include:

  • 30 × 12 mm
  • 40 × 12 mm
  • 50 × 12 mm

These inserts commonly use the two long edges as cutting edges and can be reversed when one side becomes worn.

Compared with square inserts, rectangular carbide inserts are better suited to applications requiring a longer continuous cutting edge or larger contact area.

Multiple Geometries for Different Cutterheads

Woodworking carbide inserts can be supplied with different:

  • Lengths
  • Widths
  • Thicknesses
  • Mounting holes
  • Countersinks
  • Cutting angles
  • Edge radii
  • Corner radii
  • Number of usable cutting edges

The insert geometry should match the cutterhead seat accurately to maintain correct cutting position and stable tool performance.

Typical Applications

Persistools woodworking carbide inserts are commonly used for:

  • Spiral cutterheads
  • Helical cutterheads
  • Planer cutterheads
  • Jointer cutterheads
  • Thickness planer cutterheads
  • Cutter blocks
  • Profiling cutterheads
  • Grooving tools
  • Combination woodworking cutters
  • Replaceable knife systems

Different carbide grades and cutting geometries can be selected according to the workpiece material, cutting speed, surface finish requirements, and tool construction.

What are woodworking carbide inserts used for?
Woodworking carbide inserts are replaceable cutting components used in spiral cutterheads, helical cutterheads, planer cutterheads, cutter blocks, and other woodworking tools. They are commonly used for machining solid wood and engineered wood panels.
Square inserts commonly provide four usable cutting edges and are widely used on spiral and helical cutterheads. Rectangular inserts usually provide two long cutting edges and are commonly used on cutter blocks and larger replaceable-knife systems.
R100 and R150 refer to the large radius of the cutting edge. These slightly curved edges help improve cutting overlap and surface finish when the inserts are installed on spiral or helical cutterheads.
Yes. Inserts can be manufactured according to drawings, original samples, cutterhead dimensions, or confirmed specifications. Size, thickness, mounting hole, countersink, edge radius, cutting angle, and carbide grade can all be customized.
