Flexible Shaft Carbide Burrs

Flexible shaft carbide burrs for internal grinding, deburring, and surface finishing in curved pipes, valve bodies, deep cavities, and other hard-to-reach internal areas. Available with standard carbide burr head shapes and flexible spring shafts up to 1000 mm for applications where rigid shank tools cannot follow the required path.

Flexible Shaft Carbide Burrs for Curved Internal Surfaces

Persistools flexible shaft carbide burrs are designed for grinding, deburring, weld removal, and surface finishing inside curved pipes, valve bodies, internal passages, deep cavities, and other restricted areas where conventional rigid-shank rotary burrs cannot reach effectively.

The cutting head uses conventional tungsten carbide burr geometry, while the extended shaft uses a flexible spring-type construction that allows the tool to follow curved or offset internal paths.

Custom overall lengths can be produced up to approximately 1000 mm, depending on burr size, shaft construction, application, and operating conditions.

Designed for Curved and Restricted Access

Rigid long-shank carbide burrs are suitable when the cutting point is deep but can still be reached along a relatively straight path.

Flexible shaft burrs are intended for applications where the working position is:

  • Curved
  • Offset from the tool axis
  • Located behind an obstruction
  • Deep inside a pipe or valve body
  • Difficult to access with a rigid shaft

Typical applications include:

  • Pipe internal grinding
  • Valve body finishing
  • Internal casting cleanup
  • Weld removal inside pipes
  • Deep cavity deburring
  • Internal passage finishing
  • Foundry and casting repair
  • Maintenance of fluid-handling components

Flexible Spring Shaft

The spring-type shaft provides flexibility during operation and can accommodate a certain amount of misalignment or curvature inside the workpiece.

Compared with a rigid extended shank, the flexible shaft can also absorb part of the cutting shock and vibration generated during intermittent grinding.

However, flexibility also means that the tool can deflect, whip, or bounce if it is operated incorrectly.

For this reason, proper:

  • Tool clamping
  • Shaft support
  • Operating speed
  • Feed pressure
  • Working length

are especially important when using long flexible-shaft burrs.

Standard Carbide Burr Head Shapes

Flexible shaft burrs can be supplied with common carbide burr head profiles, including standard A–N / SA–SN style shapes, depending on the required working area.

Typical head styles include:

  • Cylindrical
  • Ball
  • Ball nose cylindrical
  • Oval
  • Tree radius
  • Tree pointed
  • Flame
  • Cone
  • Tapered radius
  • Custom profiles

Different cutting geometries can also be supplied, including:

  • Single Cut
  • Double Cut
  • Aluminum Cut / Non-Ferrous Cut
  • Custom flute geometry

Custom Lengths and Configurations

Flexible shaft carbide burrs are usually application-specific products.

Persistools can manufacture tools according to:

  • Required overall length
  • Flexible shaft length
  • Shaft diameter
  • Burr head shape
  • Burr diameter
  • Cut type
  • Workpiece material
  • Pipe or valve geometry
  • Required access path
  • Machine or grinder type

For very long flexible-shaft tools, the shaft construction and operating parameters should be matched carefully to the actual working conditions to maintain safe and stable grinding performance.

What are flexible shaft carbide burrs used for?
Flexible shaft carbide burrs are used for grinding, deburring, weld removal, and finishing inside curved pipes, valve bodies, internal passages, and other areas that cannot be reached effectively with rigid-shank tools.
A long rigid-shank burr provides extended reach along a relatively straight path. A flexible shaft burr can bend and follow curved or offset internal paths, making it more suitable for pipes, valve bodies, and complex internal cavities.
The flexible spring shaft can absorb part of the cutting shock and misalignment during grinding. However, because the shaft can also deflect and bounce, proper clamping, shaft support, speed control, and feed pressure are important for stable operation.
Flexible shaft carbide burrs can be manufactured up to approximately 1000 mm overall length, depending on the shaft and application. Standard A–N / SA–SN carbide burr head shapes, multiple diameters, and different cut geometries are available.
