HSS Annular Cutter
HSS annular cutters manufactured from solid high-speed steel for clean and efficient through-hole drilling in steel plates and other machinable metals. Precision-ground cutting edges provide sharp and smooth cutting performance, while heat treatment and cryogenic treatment help improve hardness and dimensional stability. Available in multiple diameters, cutting depths, and common shank systems for magnetic drilling machines.
HSS Annular Cutters for Clean and Efficient Metal Drilling
Persistools HSS annular cutters are manufactured from solid high-speed steel and designed for efficient through-hole drilling in steel plates, structural steel, and other relatively easy-to-machine metal materials.
Unlike TCT annular cutters that use brazed tungsten carbide teeth, the cutting body and cutting edges of an HSS annular cutter are produced from high-speed steel as one integrated tool.
After machining, the cutters undergo controlled heat treatment and cryogenic treatment to achieve the required hardness, cutting performance, and dimensional stability.
One of the main advantages of HSS annular cutters is their sharp cutting edge. The material allows fine cutting-edge preparation, providing smooth cutting action and good hole quality under suitable machining conditions.
Typical applications include:
- Structural steel fabrication
- Mild steel plate drilling
- Machinery manufacturing
- General metal fabrication
- Construction steelwork
- Workshop drilling
- Magnetic drilling applications
- Small to medium diameter through holes
Sharp Cutting with Good Toughness
Compared with carbide-tipped cutters, HSS cutting edges can be ground very sharp while retaining good toughness.
This makes HSS annular cutters particularly suitable for relatively machinable materials where smooth cutting performance is more important than maximum wear resistance.
For general steel fabrication and routine hole-making applications, HSS cutters provide a practical and economical solution.
HSS vs. TCT Annular Cutters
Both HSS and TCT annular cutters are widely used with magnetic drilling machines, but they have different strengths.
HSS Annular Cutters
- Sharper cutting edges
- Smooth cutting action
- Good edge toughness
- Suitable for mild steel and relatively machinable materials
- Practical for general-purpose hole drilling
TCT Annular Cutters
- Higher wear resistance
- Longer tool life in demanding applications
- Better suited to harder materials
- More suitable for repeated drilling and heavy-duty applications
- Carbide teeth can withstand higher cutting temperatures
The appropriate cutter should therefore be selected according to the workpiece material, hole diameter, cutting depth, machine conditions, and required tool life.
